Johanna Drucker – Diagrammatic Writing

Full PDF available here.

Diagrammatic Writing was published in 2017 by Onomatopee. From their website:

Diagrammatic Writing is a poetic demonstration of the capacity of format to produce meaning. The articulation of the codex, as a space of semantically generative relations, has rarely (if ever) been subject to so highly focused and detailed a study. The text and graphical presentation are fully integrated, co-dependent, and mutually self-reflexive.

This small book work should be of interest to writers, bibliographers, designers, conceptual artists, and anyone interested in the meta-language of diagrammatic thought in graphic form” (https://www.onomatopee.net/exhibition/diagrammatic-writing).

Drucker begins her text with the statement: “The first words placed define the space.” In what follows, Drucker’s experiments with text and space explore how form/format takes the place of language itself in the articulation of meaning. Or, rather, the meaning is expressed by both the subject (language) and object (format) at once. Drucker has also written a wonderful book on the artists’ book, which is certainly related to experimental poetry, though not quite within the scope of this current project.
